What is Tyvek Paper and Why is it Everywhere?

I see Tyvek paper all over the place....on new construction, on home additions and renovations. So, this made me start to think, what is Tyvek. I started digging to find it's exact purpose. Certainly every builder doesn't seem to use it just to use it. So, it turns out Tyvek HomeWrap is a unique material used in home construction to help prevent the infiltration of air and water while allowing vapor to escape. To me that means mold and rot prevention. It turns out it also helps reduce energy consumption for homes by shielding a home from strong winds and allowing insulation to hold home and building temperatures more steady. I would think that would ease the use of the HVAC systems. Turns out it's manufactured by DuPont and is uniquely engineered by spinning extremely fine high-density polyethylene fibers that fuse together to form a web. All the super, tiny pores resist bulk water and air penetration while allowing moisture vapor to escape. While there seem to be other brands on the market that are manufactured using their own proprietary methods, Tyvek HomeWrap has been around the longest.
