Cari started her official career in real estate five years ago but confesses that she “grew up in real estate.” Her mother was a realtor for many years so Cari learned the business young. After receiving a BA in History from Rollins College in Winter Park, FL, Cari worked for Xerox selling high speed printing systems to financial and healthcare businesses in the Baltimore/DC area. Not surprisingly, with more than 12 years of sales experience, Cari sold 15 homes in her first year in real estate! That’s impressive in this challenging market.

Rhonda, Cari is an avid reader. Her favorite books are by Emily Giffin and Jennifer Weiner. Cooking, photography, home decorating, downloading new music and coaching youth sports keep Cari very busy. When she finds some “me time” you’ll likely run into Cari with her girlfriends checking out the new restaurants in Silver Spring. Cari’s current favorites: Nava Thai in Wheaton, great appetizers and wine selection at Mr. K's Toll House (a Rhonda team favorite!), awesome steaks at Ray's the Classics or Mexican from Fajita Coast or Mi Rancho (both kid-friendly)!

The Rhonda Mortensen Team is thrilled to add Kathleen to the team. Kathleen has lived in Silver Spring for most of her life and has owned five homes in area neighborhoods including Four Corners, Stonegate, Woodmoor and Woodside Park. She is truly a Silver Spring neighborhood expert!

Prior to becoming a real estate agent, Kathleen worked for 15 years as a computer analyst and database administrator with the National Security Agency in Fort Meade. Almost 10 years ago she switched gears to work in non-profit management and fundraising. Her ease with people and superior organizational skills made her a natural at projects such as Fannie Mae's Help the Homeless Mini-Walk Program Real estate is a personal passion for Kathleen.

With her husband Frank, she's owned five homes locally and two vacation properties. With this much home owning experience, remodeling is a favorite pastime. Kathleen and Frank updated the kitchen including installation of Maple cabinets and Silestone countertops, finished the basement, replaced windows and the roof, added a screened porch and deck, refinished the hardwood floors and created a family room complete with gas fireplace. The end result - a charming Woodmoor home and a lifetime hobby for Kathleen and Frank!

Aside from bumping into Kathleen at an Open House in the area, you may find her volunteering at the Academy of the Holy Cross where her daughter Kelly is a senior. Her son Alex, a 2011 graduate of Montgomery Blair High School's Computer Science and Math Magnet Program, is a freshman at UC Berkeley. Kathleen's oldest daughter, Lauren, is a graduate of University of Maryland's honors program

In her free time Kathleen enjoys reading, walking and cheering on the Washington Nationals. Kathleen and her husband, Frank, both University of Maryland graduates, currently live in Woodside Park.

On a personal note, Sherri is married to Phil, a local contractor and fellow native of the area. They have three teenagers -- Madison and Carly both attend Holy Cross High School and Connor attends Gonzaga High School. Sherri received a degree from the University of Maryland and worked for many years in the restaurant business, as a nanny and also a substitute teacher before transitioning into real estate.

In her free time, Sherri loves to travel, try new wines, read and exercise. She admits that her guilty pleasure is not food but TV! Her favorite shows are Dexter and Modern Family.

Accepting An Offer >Responding to Low Offers

The beginning of negotiations is usually the end of many months of hard work for the buyer or seller. The work ahead requires skill in order to maintain a strong position.

Sellers can lose their advantage if they do not counter an offer that a buyer has made. Even if the opening offer is beneath what the seller feels is reasonable, it is advisable for the seller to respond with a slight reduction from the asking price. The most important component in negotiating is good communication.

The best way to handle a low offer is to counter it with definite terms that are favorable to the seller. A counter offer has two advantages: 1) it keeps the buyer interested, and 2) it moves the negotiation forward and gives the buyer the opportunity to submit another offer that the seller is more likely to prefer.
