Montgomery County Public Schools According to Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS), it is the 15th largest and the 12th fastest growing school system in the United States. Montgomery County covers about 500 square miles and has a population of 925,000. About one in 7 residents, or 140,000 kids, attend public school here. 92% of students graduate and 81% of seniors take the SAT! The state of Maryland boasts a wide range of higher education opportunities including 58 colleges and universities and more than 120 private career schools. For example, the University of Maryland System is the statewide coordination of 11 public universities including: University of Maryland College Park; University of Maryland Baltimore County; Towson University; Salisbury University and others. Private institutions include: Johns Hopkins University, Loyola College in Maryland, Goucher College, St. Mary’s Seminary and University, and more. Maryland also hosts the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis.
