About the Montgomery County, Silver Spring, and Takoma Park, Maryland Area

MONTGOMERY COUNTY

Check out this great Montgomery County resource from The Washington Post!

The largest county by population (almost 1 million and up 60% since 1980!) in the state of Maryland, Montgomery County borders Washington, DC to the north and west, and therefore offers a full range of amenities for the whole family!

The county is suburban, with its county seat being Rockville, a city in the middle of Montgomery County.

In a Washington Post special issue published this spring, Montgomery County was described in several ways:

* Within 25 miles in Montgomery County, you can experience the "exotic melange of Silver Spring's downtown rebirth to the barn and silo expanse of the county that opens up just north of Poolesville, a rolling landscape of family farms."
* "...the great C&O Canal's quiet history at Great Falls and the seething beauty of the Potomac River..."
* ..."great sweep of worship -- Muslim, Christian, Buddhist and more along the an architecturally dazzling stretch of New Hampshire Avenue dubbed the highway to heaven."
* Maryland's most populous and affluent jurisdiction which offers something few suburban areas can match: a diversity of place, power and people that is anything but suburban.
* Nearly 1 in 3 adults hold a graduate or professional degree and they are among the most educated in the nation.

Transportation

Montgomery County has one of the best public transportation systems in the area. From the Metro, which is accessible from any location in the county, to the Ride-On Bus, to the MARC Train, which goes through Montgomery County from Frederick County, residents have quick access to Washington, D.C. and elsewhere.

A Great Place to Live

Homes in Montgomery County vary greatly in price as well as style to satisfy the needs of everyone, from the first-time home buyer to the luxury home. It is a place of change and growth, but a place where the old is restored as well, and the natural beauty of gardens and landscaping is valued as much as new industry and challenges of the future. Montgomery County remains a great place to raise a family!

 Bethesda, Maryland
Bethesda is a thriving urban center located in southern Montgomery County near Washington, DC. Just minutes from the District, this area has been a sought-after by homeowners for decades.

The downtown area is known for its 150+ restaurants as well as other entertainment options including shopping, theatre, art galleries and more. In addition to easy, direct access to highways and Metro, many large businesses are located in Bethesda including Marriott International, Lockheed Martin, National Institutes of Health and Bethesda Naval Hospital.

Bethesda also hosts some of the areas best private schools, golf courses and more! Bethesda is a wealthy and well-educated district and is ranked among the best educated cities in the US. In the downtown area, there are plenty of urban living spaces both new and refurbished. Outside the downtown area, the older homes have maintained a strong value despite recent changes in the real estate market.

SILVER SPRING

Silver Spring was named after a mica-flecked area spring. The site of the original spring is in Acorn Park, located in the downtown area.

Silver Spring is amazing and the changes taking place are impressive! In addition to the revitalization of the downtown area including new premier dining, shopping, office and residential space, Silver Spring offers something for everyone. It's close to Washington DC, it's ethnically diverse, and it goes from urban to suburban to an almost a county feel.

The area is large but is made up of many neighborhoods, such as Indian Springs, Woodside, Woodmoor, Four Corners, Sligo, Forest Glen, Long Branch and Takoma Park, which is just next door. A few minutes away are Colesville, Burnt Mills, Sandy Spring, Glenmont, Layhill, Wheaton and more.

Major areas of employment are in education, social services, and health, as well as scientific, management, professional, administrative, and waste management services.

Silver Spring is also home to a good many religious institutions.

Silver Spring remains a wonderful place to call home and raise a family!

TAKOMA PARK

Takoma Park, whose name means "high up near heaven,is a city in Montgomery County. It's land area is 2.1 square miles and is known to be the first planned commuter suburb in the area.

Takoma Park borders Silver Spring. It is known as a liberal community with a diverse population. The city is just northeast of Washington, D.C., and so its residents have easy access to this great city.

Twenty-five percent of employment in the area is in the areas of health, social services, and education.

Takoma Park has fabulous transportation facilities: from Metro-bus to Metro-rail to Amtrak to Traffic Cam, even special services are provided by Montgomery County for senior citizens and the disabled!

With its close proximity to Washington DC and its excellent transportation, Takoma Park stands out as an enjoyable and lively place to live.

Financing Your Home >Qualifying For A Loan

It is useful for home buyers to understand the difference between loan pre-qualification and pre-approval. Pre-qualification, which in today's marketplace is usually done by mortgage brokers, means working with the buyers to determine how much they can afford and which loans are the most likely to be available to them. Loan pre-qualification can save buyers time and money and can even be a bargaining tool with a seller. However, pre-qualification is not the same as loan "pre-approval". The mortgage broker can often get the buyer a pre-qualification letter, but pre-approval must be issued by the mortgage lender.

Pre-approval means that the lender has definitely committed to loaning the buyer money, once the house itself is approved. Since it is a much stronger pledge, it is a much more valuable negotiating tool. When you hear someone talking about "pre-approval", they are referring to specific acknowlegment by a lender that they are willing to loan the buyer money. The real estate agent can be of assistance in this process.
